Kids Moved Out? Redecorate the Room with Wainscoting!

living room with sliding doors and piano - paneled wainscoting

Regular readers of this blog know we don’t just talk about our authentic paneled wainscoting.

We’re interested in helping people make the most of their homes (and if those changes involve ordering our custom wainscoting online, all the better).

Today, we’re looking at a topic nearly every family faces sooner or later: what to do when the kids move out. Let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to make an empty nest feel a little less empty.

Guest rooms

Many people opt to turn their kid’s room into a guest room after they’ve moved out. But if you have two kids whose rooms are side by side, you can consider knocking out a wall to turn those rooms into a guest suite.

You’re not exactly gaining more square footage, but you are giving yourself the space to do more, such as creating a guest suite that has a space for guests to do their morning workout.

Rec rooms

You can also turn unused bedrooms into a place for recreation, whether that means putting in a card table to host poker tournaments or game nights, or using this space to launch a new hobby. Your daughter’s old bedroom can transform into your wife’s new art studio or an in-home yoga studio. If you and your spouse are big readers, consider giving yourself a home library.

Man (or woman) caves

With the kids moved out, you and your significant other now have the space to stretch out. An old bedroom can become a place for you to work from home or that den or indoor she-shed you’ve always wanted. You can create a study/reading room, or just a space to take phone calls from friends and family.

Storage spaces

If you find that none of these options strike your fancy, you can always turn an unused bedroom into a storage space or even a cedar closet, a move that can be achieved by lining the walls with cedar planks or panel liners.

Not only do these planks look nice, they also smell nice, and provide a natural deterrent to pests such as silverfish, cockroaches and moths.

You can use this space to keep things that might normally take up space in your attic, basement or garage, such as books, unwanted clothing, seasonal decorations.

Old bedroom, new bedroom

Keep in mind that even though your kids have moved out, they’ll still come home from time to time and will need a place to stay. With that in mind, why not just turn their old bedroom into a  new bedroom, perhaps with a slightly more grown-up look and feel.
